Staying Fit

As a New Yorker who strives to keep up appearances, I am a "member" of one of New York's premier gyms. How do I afford the $1500 initiation fee and extremely high monthly dues? I don't. I am a member of New York Health and Racquet Club, yet my membership there cost me under $250. I scored this deal by working for a large corporate law firm in the summer, in which one of the perks was a discount gym membership. Although the internship was for the summer, I held on to the membership card, and have taken full advantage of its facilities. The trick to New York City gyms, is that they always have a promotion, so take advantage of them. Here is solid advice that has worked for me:
1. Get to know a membership recruiter, they can usually get you day passes that help you on breaks from school or until you find a more permanent option.
2. Ask the gym about student deals, but in particular deals that may limit the times and locations that you use, but in turn offer you a heavily discounted price. Think about it, do you really need access to all 15 locations in NYC?
3. If you are lucky to score an internship in a corporate office, check out the HR department, they can assist you in locating employee perks, like heavily discounted gym memberships.

If all else fails, there is always the park, you can run for as long as you want, any time of the day, for FREE!!!.

That’s my frugal advice for today.
